SEO Fail Blog 302 Redirect Fail

seofailblog 302 redirect fail

Well, this is the firt time the SEO Fail Blog will have to fail itself. Apparently the non-www version of our site is redirecting to the www version, but it’s a 302 redirect! For those who don’t know, a 302 redirect is a temporary redirect that will not pass link juice to the url it redirects to. A 301 redirect is a permanent redirect that does pass the link juice.

Lesson learned: Always check your redirects. Just because it is redirecting somewhere, it doesn’t mean it is a 301. Here is a tool you can use to check your redirects: http://www.seoconsultants.com/tools/headers

Web Head Marketing Fail

web-head-marketing-google-local-fail

Never hire an internet marketing company that doesn’t do for themselves what they promise they’ll do for you. You know their claims of success are false when they aren’t using those same strategies for their own company. My friend received a random (spam) email from these guys telling him how the Google local listings are the “best” way to get traffic in the search engines. While Google Local is a great way to capture local business, it shouldn’t be your primary means of search marketing.

Upon inspection of their site, my friend was not able to find any detailed information about this company. No physical address, no page revealing the company’s principals, nothing. You would think that a site so structured around Google local optimization would know enough about it to put their own physical address on their site. Never trust a company with your money that won’t tell you who their principals, where they are located, or don’t do for themselves what they “can do for you”.

Jim Matheson Website Campaign Fail

jim-matheson-site-fail

Notice anything strange about JimMatheson.com? Nothing serious, it’s just supporting his Democratic primary opponent, Claudia Wright. Lesson learned: Make sure you own your own name domain if you plan on being a politician.

Julie Joyce Link Fish Media Trojan Fail

I was reading a great post today by Julie Joyce on SearchEngineLand.com. From her profile I discovered the link development firm she owns, Link Fish Media. As I went to visit the site, my trusty Kaspersky brought me this message:

julie-joyce-link-fish-media-trojan-fail

Julie, I hope this is a mistake, or that your site was just hacked. If not…..???

I would post the url to her site but I don’t want to infect anyone. If you’re really curious you can get it from the image above.

RedZ Fail

redz-marketing-tactic-fail

A friend has received a couple of calls from the search engine RedZ trying to get him to purchase advertising on their search engine. They point to the large amounts of traffic coming to his site from the search engine. Sure enough, it sends a lot of referring traffic, but my friend was smart enough to recognize in analytics that all of the traffic had a 90%+ bounce rate with an average time on site of about 1 second, leading him to believe that RedZ has an automated program to trigger site visit counts like this before they make a sales call.

Here is another complaint about RedZ: http://www.trafficflowseo.com/2009/07/seeing-redz-story-of-click-fraud-and.html

They are ranking number one for “Guitar Straps”, but how long will this spammy strategy last? Is this a win or fail? From my perspective this is a fail.
